Here’s reason #1 why prostitution sucks. The practice of prostitution involves being alone in a room with a man who thinks he has the right to buy sex with you. Unfortunately, you don’t know what else he thinks he has the right to do. Maybe he thinks he has the right to hit you a couple of times, or rob you, or follow you home, or even brutally kill you and dump your body in the Orlando Florida area.

Women in prostitution frequently say they “know in my gut”, “have good instincts”, “know how to take care of myself.”  The six dead prostitutes in Florida probably thought that too.

Why do so many men think they can get away with killing prostitutes? Perhaps because they DO so often get away with it.

“The anonymous and transient lifestyle of prostitutes makes it difficult for law-enforcement officials to track down their killers.”

“Sgt. Allen Lee of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said he has gotten some good leads from other prostitutes but that a killing by a stranger “is the most difficult crime to solve. It helps when they know someone.”

Sadly, these women are no longer anonymous. Each of them now has taken her name in a long and tragic list. Each of them had someone who raised them, someone who taught them how to read, someone who cared about them. Maybe all those people could have done SOMETHING to keep these women out of prostitution. Maybe some of them tried. Maybe we can all do better.

“Forty-eight-year-old Regan Kendall, found dismembered July 5 near Osceola Parkway and Boggy Creek Road, was the first of three women killed last month in Orange and Osceola counties.”

“The naked body of Kelly Lanthorne, 37, was discovered July 14 behind the Courtyard Villas apartments in Orange. Venus Martinez, 29, was found July 29 lying in shrubs on an embankment across the street from the Orlando Lynx bus terminal. Investigators have not released how either woman was slain.”

“Three more prostitutes, Iwana Patton, Julie Ann Green and LaQuetta Mae Gunther, were slain in Daytona Beach in 2006 by a serial killer who stripped them and shot them in the back of the head, execution style.”

“Patton, 35, was found in a wooded area. A worker discovered Green, 34, near a construction site just a month earlier, and a passer-by came across the body of Gunther, 45, crouched in an alley.”

Rest in Peace, sisters.  I’m sorry we all failed you.
